Avi -- (Kick Off Lunch)
Updated: 12 Jul 2011 Author: Simon and Schuster
When: Saturday, Sept. 17 at 12:00 noon
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Book: City of Orphans
The streets of 1893 New York are full of life: crowded, filthy, dangerous. If you are a newsboy like thirteen-year- old Maks Geless, you need to watch out for Bruno, leader of the Plug Ugly Gang whose shadowy, sinister boss is plotting to take control of all the newsies on the lower East Side. With Bruno's boys in fierce pursuit, Maks discovers Willa, a strange girl who lives alone in an alley. It is she, stick in hand, who fights off the Plug Uglies--but further dangers await. Maks must find a way to free his sister Emma from The Tombs, the city jail where she has been imprisoned for stealing a watch at the glamorous new Waldorf Hotel. Maks, believing her innocent, has only four days to prove it. Fortunately, there is Bartleby Donck, the eccentric lawyer (among other employments) to guide Maks and Willa in the art of detection. Against a backdrop alive with the sights and sounds of tenement New York, Maks, as boy detective, must confront a teeming world of wealth and crime, while struggling against powerful forces threatening new immigrants and the fabric of family love.

Barbara Peters, Author
Updated: 03 Aug 2011 Author: Boutique of Quality Books
Author Barbara Peters has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from C.W. Post College of Long Island University, a Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from Stony Brook University and a Master of Science in Counseling from Georgia State. As a nurse and counselor, Barbara has worked in diverse mental settings from managing behavioral health organizations to psychiatric hospitals and employee assistance consulting firms. She is certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors and a member of The Licensed Professional Counselors of Georgia. Her main passion is working with couples, utilizing a solution-focused approach with an optimistic outlook as she guides them toward developing a stronger relationship. She also works with individuals in a variety of areas. "My counseling style is interactive, respectful, non-judgmental, and supportive. With gentle questioning, I help people get in touch with their own values and ideals and gain trust in themselves to make decisions for a better lifestyle," she states.
With a passion for writing, along with helping couples build and sustain strong relationships, Barbara wrote her first book, "The Gift of a Lifetime, Building a Marriage that Lasts," to give married couples information and guidance that could make the difference between taking a second honeymoon or a trip to a divorce attorney's office. Through counseling advice and the acronyms "FACTS" and "FAITH," Barbara outlines the steps needed to have a successful marriage.
In her second book, "He Said, She Said, I Said - 7 Keys to Relationship Success," Barbara breaks down possible perceptions and misconceptions in seven key relationship areas: communication, trust, forgiveness, intimacy, acceptance, friendship, and love, by using common sense, wisdom, and some professional advice to open up the possibility for a different approach.

Susan Millar Williams & Stephen Hoffius -- (Charleston Panel)

When: Saturday, Sept. 17 at 4:10 pm

Book: Upheaval in Charleston
On August 31, 1886, a massive earthquake centered near Charleston, South Carolina, sent shock waves as far north as Maine, down into Florida, and west to the Mississippi River. When the dust settled, residents of the old port city were devastated by the death and destruction.
"Upheaval in Charleston" is a gripping account of natural disaster and turbulent social change in a city known as the cradle of secession. Weaving together the emotionally charged stories of Confederate veterans and former slaves, Susan Millar Williams and Stephen G. Hoffius portray a South where whites and blacks struggled to determine how they would coexist a generation after the end of the Civil War.
This is also the story of Francis Warrington Dawson, a British expatriate drawn to the South by the romance of the Confederacy. As editor of Charleston's "News and Courier," Dawson walked a lonely and dangerous path, risking his life and reputation to find common ground between the races. Hailed as a hero in the aftermath of the earthquake, Dawson was denounced by white supremacists and murdered less than three years after the disaster. His killer was acquitted after a sensational trial that unmasked a Charleston underworld of decadence and corruption.
Combining careful research with suspenseful storytelling, "Upheaval in Charleston" offers a vivid portrait of a volatile time and an anguished place.
